Jimmy Lee Sudduth is one of the most prolific and beloved self-taught artists in the South. His best work—most of which was created between 1970 and 1990—displays an impressive command of materials and technique. Though Sudduth is best known for painting with mud and other natural materials, he also used house paint. With its exquisite balance and subtle tonalities, this small painting demonstrates Sudduth's superb command of color and composition and emanates a mysterious quality found in many of the artist's paintings of the 1980s. This work owes its elegiac mood in part to the absence of human figures that usually populate Sudduth's cityscapes.
