A characteristic of the Aesthetic movement of the last quarter of the nineteenth century was close collaboration between artist and craftsperson, whether in creating frames for paintings or, as in this case, painting directly onto the panels of a functional piece of furniture. Although the maker of this cabinet is unknown, the panels were the work of New York artist Will H. Low. Low’s panels depict a musical vignette, suggesting that the cabinet might have held sheet music.
