The influence of Japanese decoration is evident in the elaborate marquetry panels of this parlor cabinet by Gustave and Christian Herter, who were among a wave of immigrant German cabinetmakers to New York just before the Civil War. Known for the superb quality and craftsmanship of its furniture and for its fashionable designs, Herter Brothers became the country’s leading interior design firm, with affluent patrons ranging from New York to San Francisco.
