Danny Lyon created this image as part of his photo-essay The Bikeriders. He joined the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, where he befriended other members and accompanied them on the road to document the biker community from within. From 1963 to 1966, Lyon completely integrated into their circle and succeeded in producing photographs that represent a candid, firsthand study of 1960s motorcycling subculture. The resulting photographs drifted from traditional reportage into a style more akin to fine art through Lyon’s inventive and evocative compositions. He made this portrait by skillfully capturing the rider in the reflection of his bike’s rearview mirror.
