This richly grained Neoclassical mahogany card table, with its interplay of woods and geometric overlays, was made in Baltimore sometime between the American Revolution and the War of 1812. The table features extensive satinwood inlay tassels of intertwining husks, or bellflowers, and ovals in classic patterns from the Baltimore area, complemented by delicately tapered legs. The table’s elegant serpentine front—a difficult feature to execute—is more frequently found on sideboards, making this work extremely rare and important as well as beautiful.
