Pierre-Imbert Drevet, called the Younger Pierre, learned printmaking from his father. In 1724, he engraved this portrait of Cardinal Dubois after a 1723 painting by Hyacinthe Rigaud, now at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The printed image, like the painting, depicts French cardinal and statesman Guillaume Dubois dressed in expensive attire, indicating his status. Dubois was employed by Louis XIV as a tutor to his grandson, the future king Louis XV. In this image, Dubois holds a letter with the words “Au Roy” (to the king), referencing his relationship with the French royalty. He was appointed cardinal—a title with political power—in 1721, just a few years before the painting and corresponding print were created.
