The expatriate American artist John Singer Sargent traveled to the Alps almost every year between 1900 and the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Cervino was likely painted on one of these annual excursions to the mountainous region along the borders of Italy and Switzerland. He painted there in both oil and watercolor, the latter often used for less formal, on-the-spot renderings.
