Ewan Gibbs is known for intimately scaled, meticulously rendered drawings that employ a unique visual language that Gibbs developed as an art student in London. At that time, while looking closely at Pop Art and intrigued by the found image, Gibbs happened across a book of knitting patterns. Printed in black and white, this book broke down the composition of a given pattern stitch by stitch, with different marks (circles, triangles, hatch marks, etc.) indicating different colors of yarn. He quickly adapted this knitting shorthand in his work, emphasizing such delicate, detailed marks in his drawings, which are painstakingly based on photographs, as in Chicago, 2010, which is based on a photo that Gibbs took of the Hancock Tower.
