In his series Permanent Collection, Tim Davis photographed works of art on display at museums around the world as a means of playfully scrutinizing the visual quirks of viewing art in situ. Davis visited the High and photographed Walker Evans’s Church Window from an oblique angle, slightly distorting the perspective of the image and capturing the reflection of an adjacent gallery window on the framing glass. By accentuating the surface of Evans’s print, Davis encourages us to look at rather than through the photograph and, through his particular choice of subject matter, cheekily undermines the notion of a photograph as a window onto the world.
