William Bradford was one of the most remarkable minor masters of nineteenth-century American landscape painting. Influenced by the American seascape painter Fitz Hugh Lane and the meticulous Dutch-born artist Albert van Beest, Bradford maintained a lifelong fascination with the sea and ships around his native New Bedford, Massachusetts. Always seeking new locations, he made several trips to the Labrador region of Newfoundland between 1854 and 1857.
