Cockman Always Rises Gray, is a take-no-prisoners parody of the American political system featuring a penis-nosed, scrotum-cheeked man whom the artist calls a “dick head.” The rude caricature personifies the subject of Judith Bernstein’s critique of male chauvinism and vulgar gender prejudices entrenched within the national political discourse. It underscores the timelessness (“always rises”) of the dilemma of sexist violence embedded in our national discourse, whether given voice by infamous former Alabama governor George Wallace in the 1960s or today by President Donald Trump, and the perpetuation of endless cycles of war, power, sex, and death that fuels such rhetoric.
