Often holding the camera at an angle and shooting rapidly as he walked, Winogrand embraced chance and the frenetic energy of the streets of New York. He often caught his subjects mid-motion in humorous, absurd situations such as this one. By waiting for the “decisive moment,” Winogrand succeeded in transforming an average beachgoer into a headless man to suggest a carnival sideshow happening right under the boardwalk of Coney Island, one of America’s most iconic amusement parks.
