A member of the Royal Academy, William Collins was well known for his landscape and portrait paintings. He traveled extensively throughout the British Isles and it is likely that on one such trip he sketched this charming cottage scene in the parish town of Iver. Located in the county of Buckinghamshire, Iver is approximately twenty miles from the center of London. In this loosely sketched pencil drawing, an overgrown wooden fence encloses a cluster of thatched roof dwellings. At left, the silhouette of a female figure is barely discernible in the doorway of one of the cottages.
