In a career that spanned more than three decades, Eugène Atget compiled an exhaustive pictorial inventory of the architecture and street life of Paris. Dating to the late 1800s and early 1900s, his photographs witness the city’s transformation into a modern metropolis. Atget photographed this side street, the “Court of the Dragon”—which no longer exists—early in the morning when few people were about. The slightly low point of view from which he photographed the receding street enhances the tight and winding feel of older sections of Paris.
