In this print, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec depicts dancer Jane Avril offstage, inspecting the artist journal "The Original Print" (L’Estampe originale) as it comes off the printing press. Printer Père Cotell can be seen operating a lithographic press in the background. Toulouse-Lautrec made this image of the printing process to serve as the cover for the journal, which advocated for print as an original and creative, rather than merely reproductive, artistic medium. The journal, published in nine issues between 1893 and 1895, included original prints by many artists in the High’s collection, including Pierre Bonnard, Camille Pissarro, Pierre Renoir, and Paul Signac.
