Acanthus leaf motifs adorn this large Neoclassical tureen by Frederick Marquand, made during his partnership with his cousin Josiah Penfield at the silversmith firm J. Penfield and Co. in Savannah, Georgia. The Neoclassical form and ornament such as the fluted cover and sides, the acanthus motifs in the cartouche, borders, and handles, and the egg-and-dart border seen on the stem are all motifs inspired by antiquity and re-popularized by Napoleon. Frederick Marquand worked in various successful silversmith firms with his father Isaac, his brothers Josiah and Henry, and his cousin Josiah Penfield, in both Savannah and New York City until the late 1830s.
