This light weight Crochet chair was first hand-crocheted, then dipped in resin and placed on a chair mould to dry. Afterwards, the mould was removed and the form became a fully functional seat. By marrying the traditional craft of crochet with contemporary design, Dutch designer Marcel Wanders has created an object that offers a contemporary twist on hand-sewn “upholstery”: this traditionally decorative element also functions as the structural component. This chair is one of two prototypes made for the Crochet Furniture series that launched in 2006 (also offering lamps and coffee tables). Wanders has played a vital role in developing new practices and approaches to Dutch design since the establishment of the highly influential group Droog Design in 1993. Wander's furniture and jewelry show a range of materials, process, intent, and form, while maintaining an element of surprise in each piece.
