Tim Lewis is part of the second generation of a family of Kentucky artists that included well-known carvers Minnie and Garland Adkins. Lewis’s most notable sculptural pieces are forceful depictions of biblical and religious themes or animals suggested by the features of the stone itself. This representation of the Crucifixion shows Lewis’s typically direct and forceful rendition of form and mood. This is not Christ in his last agonized hours but just after them, flanked by two praying figures who are probably the Virgin and John, Christ's beloved disciple. The sculpture conveys a sense of extreme stillness and peace.
