Diogenes di Sinope (413–323 B.C.), an ascetic philosopher of antiquity, is said to have renounced worldly goods. This etching by Salvator Rosa depicts a moment when, upon seeing a youth drinking water from cupped hands, Diogenes threw away his drinking bowl, remarking "A child has beaten me in the plainness of living." The print reproduces (in reverse) Rosa’s painting of the same subject, now held by the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen (1651/52).
