In the fall of 2005, Taryn Simon traveled to the Indonesian city of Banda Aceh, where the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami wrought its greatest devastation. Among the photographs she took is this portrait of Dr. Sri, which shows the young doctor in the spotless operating theatre where she treated dozens of victims during flood conditions in the hours following the tsunami. Simon’s formal choices—stark framing and dramatic lighting—are a departure from the typically sensationalized reportage style of photojournalists in areas of conflict, and imbue her subject with a sense of strength, calm, and accomplishment.
