Adolph Gottlieb’s series of “imaginary landscapes” and “bursts,” such as Duet, presents the duality of an earthbound realm and a transcendent cosmological one. Gottlieb, like his fellow Abstract Expressionists, constantly sought inspiration from the subconscious and “the simple expression of the complex thought.” Gottlieb’s art increasingly became painting about painting—a meditation on the process of applying liquid pigment to canvas.
