Harry Callahan began photographing his wife, Eleanor, shortly after their marriage in 1936, and she remained his primary muse until 1963. Not only was Eleanor the most pivotal subject in Callahan’s artistic development, she also worked to financially support his career and their family for decades. Eleanor was always willing to model: “Anytime he wanted to take a picture, regardless of what I was doing, I said, ‘Okay, fine, just a second,’ and I was right there.”
