Tony Cragg’s diversely complex oeuvre deals with the things that populate our world, particularly the scraps and detritus of consumer culture. In this piece, for example, the variety of materials ranges from Coca-Cola bottles, wine goblets, and laboratory equipment to a dime-store candy dish. Cragg’s manipulation of these materials helps us to see them in new ways. These things are physically and metaphysically tied to us, yet we are increasingly unaware of the role they play. Confronted with objects that are presented in a new context, scale, or color, we have the opportunity to reconsider the physical world and the metaphysical inferences we draw from it.
