The glove appears in the finder’s/Klinger’s nightmare. Continuing the watery motif, other gloves swim upward, perhaps to free the lost glove, wedged behind the sleeper’s pillow. Other figures struggling in the flood try to rouse the dreamer and entreat him to return the glove. This composition is reminiscent of the eerie style of the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, who—nearly one hundred years earlier—created a series of similarly nightmarish etchings.
