John Culver is a native of Sparta, Georgia, who lived in Atlanta for a few years before returning home in 2000. Working with paint pens, artists’ markers, and a magnifying lens, John Culver creates his phantasmagoric drawings in the hours before and after work as a meat cutter in a local grocery store. Drawing on his interests in science, history, and science fiction, he plays with time and space in his drawings, incorporating his ideas about the Egyptian pyramids, space travel, futuristic beings, and sources of power into a vivid, unfamiliar universe. Fountain of Youth is one of Culver’s most successful works, subtly blending organic and geometric forms in ambiguous space.
