A leading practitioner in the field, Atlanta-based artist Jon Eric Riis has been creating intricately hand-woven tapestries for nearly four decades. Art history, nature, mythology, religion, and politics are some of the themes he explores, putting a contemporary twist on an age-old tradition. The exterior of Freedom’s Price echoes military desert camouflage, while the interior is blood red, with the adage “Home Sweet Home” woven in a Gothic script reminiscent of the Victorian era. This contemporary tapestry deals with Riis’s anti-war beliefs and suggests the illusion of security while referring to the home front and the domestic origins of craft.
