Photographer Doris Ulmann is best known for her sensitive documentation of Appalachian culture, especially its rich art and craft traditions. She made these photographs as part of her series on the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina. Founded in 1925, the school is based on a Danish model of noncompetitive education, where students are taught a variety of disciplines and crafts such as basketry, carpentry, blacksmithing, needlework, weaving, wood turning, and more.
