This realistic depiction of a well-used Bible provides captions for the following four prints. The book is open at the gospel of Saint Luke but contains only those verses from the original text that correspond directly to what is depicted in Tissot’s narrative scenes. As the inscription in the lower-right corner states, Tissot not only composed the scenes but also etched them; it would not have been unusual, however, if he had employed a professional etcher to translate his drawings or paintings into prints.
