Mary Weatherford is a Los Angeles–based painter. Educated at Bard and Princeton, Weatherford long has created large-scale, abstract works using Flashe pigment, a hyper-bright and easily manipulated medium. Her earlier works also incorporate seashells and oceanic motifs. Escaping the consumeristic context of neon, Weatherford uses neon as a new gesture, like that of a brushstroke. Likening these works to history paintings, the artist responds to the blur between the urban sprawl of American cities and the nature that lies just beyond them.
