With tremendous wit, bravado, and skill, designer Jaime Hayon (Spanish, born 1974) has married two seemingly unrelated and commonplace things—a chicken and a rocking chair—to create a dynamic, enigmatic, and engaging work of art. For this piece, Hayon wanted to create something that “makes you dream when you look at it.” It celebrates Hayon’s vision of childhood and fantasy with its whimsical form and vivid green color. It was originally commissioned in 2006 for a gallery in Shanghai for an exhibition entitled “Contrasts and Contradictions: Chapter 1,” themed around the question of design versus art and whether functionality limits creativity. The subsequent limited edition of 8 (including this piece) was made by Italian craftsmen based on the original design.
