In this tribute to her grandmother Hattie’s loving home, Johnson recreates blooms from her beloved elder’s garden out of small hexagons and yo-yos—cinched medallions of fabric fastened in the center with beads and other embellishments. Johnson worked as a teaching artist for the High for twenty years, and she made this quilt after working with a school for learners with low vision—an experience that made her think differently about how yo-yos added special texture to her quilt. Yo-yos were also the first thing that grandmother Hattie taught her how to sew.
