Many nineteenth-century sculptors who derived subjects from historical and contemporary literature also portrayed the writers themselves. This portrait bust by a famous American sculptor based in Rome, Hiram Powers, depicts the internationally acclaimed American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. With historical narratives set in Colonial times such as Evangeline and Hiawatha, Longfellow established an American mythology that gained a broad following and even helped shape the incipient Colonial Revival in following years.
