Jazz imagery recurs throughout Bearden’s work. He was interested in music from a young age; Duke Ellington, a family friend, bought a painting from his first exhibition. Bearden even dabbled in jazz composition and wrote a hit song, “Seabreeze,” in the early 1950s. In this print, the busy composition and bright colors visually manifest the cacophonous sounds of jazz.
