One in a series of twelve, this photograph addresses critical international conflicts and political issues while challenging viewers to reconsider how we understand our world through photographs. As a photojournalist and an active member of Magnum, Delahaye created large eight-foot wide prints intended for a gallery or art museum rather than circulation in mass media, where they would receive fleeting attention before the page was turned and the event became “old news.” By presenting these images on such a massive scale and solely in an artistic context, Delahaye makes a very considered and deliberate decision to have these works viewed as symbols, potential icons of our time, rather than simply treated as journalistic illustrations of news events.
