In the true folk tradition, art is handed down from father to son in the Dial family of Alabama. The eldest son of a renowned contemporary self-taught artist, Thornton Dial, Jr., creates furniture, assemblage paintings, and sculpture. Although much of his work is satirical, the extensive series of diverse Crucifixion scenes he has created are deeply felt and poignantly realized. In this example, Dial has combined cast-off materials with paint to produce a moving image of suffering.
