In the mid-1930s, when former Bauhaus student Wilhelm Wagenfeld created his sleek and stackable Kubus dishes, less than one percent of German households had a refrigerator (compared with thirty-four percent in the United States). Designed with such modern appliances in mind, the heat-resistant containers (with recessed handles and interchangeable lids) were an instant hit. Advertised with taglines like “even the simplest glass can be beautiful” and “from the pantry or the fridge straight to the table,” Kubus perfectly expressed the Bauhaus mantra of straightforward, attractive products created for a new way of living.
