Sculptor, painter, and architect Émile-Antoine Bourdelle abandoned traditional academic training and style as he sought other movements in sculpture and admired the works of sculptors such as Aimé-Jules Dalou. After 1900 Bourdelle began to find new inspiration in the art of ancient Greece. It was through the studies for his Head of Apollo that the artist felt he achieved his own style, distinct from Dalou, Rodin, and Falguière. During this period Bourdelle also executed several versions of La Bacchante.
