Honoré Daumier is best known for the satiric wit of his prints, paintings, and sculptures. In 1832, he was thrown in prison for offending King Louis Philippe with his political cartoons. This print from 1862, "Landscapists at Work" (Paysagistes au travail), belongs to a special series, "Artists’ Recollections" (Souvenirs d’Artistes), that includes Daumier’s most famous lithographs. The print portrays two painters reclining in a landscape, one dozing on his back, the other propped up on his elbow. Daumier’s command of the lithographic crayon is apparent in his representations of light and shadow, intense heat and cool shade.
