In 1883, the year in which he was made a Chevalier in the Legion of Honor, Henri Joseph Harpignies became associated with Paris-based art dealers Arnold & Tripp, who agreed to commission and sell his works. Harpignies was a prolific painter of landscapes even after his eyesight began to fail. In his later work, he returned to broad masses and the silvery tonality of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (French, 1796–1875). The inspiration of Corot is evident in this 1896 work, in which the simple elements of a stream, trees, and an old bridge are combined to form a harmonious composition that is both crisp and evocative.
