Lear with Cordelia in his arms Act V, Scene III: “If that her breath will mist or stain the stone, Why, then she lives.” Although Edmund, dying, rescinds his earlier order to execute Lear and Cordelia, the gesture comes too late. Lear’s hope that Cordelia is still breathing is not answered.
