Many hallmarks of the Arts and Crafts style are discernible in this magazine pedestal made by the Roycrofters, a community of craftsmen working in upstate New York. Handcrafted with a strong form, unadorned surfaces, and visible joinery, this pedestal held true to the Roycrofters’ belief in the superiority of the products of honest, hard work done by hand instead of machine. The pedestal was designed to hold books or magazines—a clear reference to the importance of reading in a happy and inviting home.
