“Sculpture communicates an immediate sense of life—you can feel the pulse of it,” said Barbara Hepworth. Her exuberant approach to both sculpture and contemporary logic manifests itself in Makutu, a Maori word meaning “to bewitch” or “a spell/incantation.” This title reflects the essence of Hepworth’s style—spiritual, mystical, and epic—while the design reflects a larger trend in her oeuvre, wherein she explored the material’s inner and outer elements, represented here by a large hole that pierces the upright form of the bronze.
