Everett Shinn often depicted the urban poor and revealed the hardships of impoverished city life through careful character studies. Also interested in popular theatre, he often wrote, produced, and showed his plays in the fifty-five-seat theatre in his New York City home. A combination of these two interests, Martha and Mary are downtrodden characters from Shinn’s one-set play The Dump, set accordingly in a city dump.
