During the 1920s, Galerie Bernheim-Jeune commissioned Gaston Duchamp, known as Jacques Villon, to execute a series of prints after paintings then in the Bernheim-Jeune collection. Over a period of almost ten years, Villon interpreted some 50 paintings by 32 artists. In the resulting prints, Villon’s attention to color and hue is particularly striking. Villon’s rendering of "Motherhood" (Maternité), a 1901 painting by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973) now in a private collection, incorporates rich blues that contrast with fields of beige. This print was initially printed in an edition of 200, after which the plate was cancelled. However, restoration work authorized by Villon removed the scratches and allowed the production of an unsigned edition, issued by the Chalcographie du Louvre. The High's impression likely comes from this later printing.
