Amoako Boafo paints fellow members of the African diaspora and is known for his use of bright, saturated color and flattened shapes. His work seeks to challenge the dehumanizing or objectifying stereotypes of Africanness specifically and Blackness in general. His portraits bestow their subjects with an air of dignity and self-respect while depicting them as psychologically complex, emotionally engaged people. Monstera Leaf Sleeves features the figure’s shadow, the visual equivalent for the subject’s interiority. The title refers to the monstera leaf pattern on the subject’s sleeves.
