Russian-born Ilya Bolotowsky immigrated to New York in 1923 and was one of the founding members of the American Abstract Artists (AAA), a group that formed in 1936 to promote American abstract art. Bolotowsky likely made Abstract around 1933 when he began painting abstractly but before he had begun to exclude biomorphic elements from his art.
