Rather than making reproductions of colonial American or early English silver, renowned silversmith Arthur J. Stone created new designs based on historical decorations and forms. This small mustard pot with a hinged lid and miniature spoon was adapted from American Federal silver prototypes. The pot is lined with cobalt glass, which is visible through the perforations in its silver reticulated sides. A 1919 magazine article characterized Stone as the successor to Paul Revere, the best-known early American silversmith. Born in England, Stone established his own silver studio in 1901.He was active until his retirement in 1937 at the age of ninety. The shop closed in 1957.
