Themes of motherhood and portraiture have defined Chantal Joffe’s painting over the past decade. In Naked Self-Portrait With Esme With Her Arms Raised she paints herself unclothed, shoulders slumped alongside her 11-year-old daughter. The nudity of the artist’s aged body in contrast with the girl who strikes a listless pose in her nightshirt, is stoic but vulnerable bearing witness to the passing of time. The gaze of the artist upon her own body and that of her daughter in the mirror, from which she is painting, is detached but not dispassionate – evaluating likenesses and differences with a protective maternal impartiality.
