In 1929, Berenice Abbott returned to New York after nearly a decade abroad to find a modern metropolis greatly changed. Like her mentor in Paris, Eugène Atget, Abbott fervently photographed New York’s architecture and inhabitants to capture this rapidly modernizing city. In 1935, the Federal Arts Project funded her Changing New York documentary project, for which Abbott produced more than three hundred photographs—including this striking nighttime view.
