In 1937 the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awarded Weston its prestigious fellowship. He was the first photographer to receive the honor. The grant freed him to pursue a new approach to his craft, and he set out to photograph landscapes throughout California and the American West. A notable shift from the style of his early work, this California landscape reflects Weston’s increasing use of wide frames to capture the geometric patterns nature produces at a grand scale.
